Small Victories - Issue 19

The stages of finding out Trump fired Comey, as performed by Donald Glover:

You better believe people are looking into all the options to figure it out.

Your weekly songspiration!

1. Despite Trump’s attempt to end the investigation into his ties with Russia, the Senate Intelligence Committee invited Comey to testify next week and subpoenaed Michael Flynn. (Federal prosecutors also issued subpoenas to Flynn’s associates.) Meanwhile, Democrats slowed Senate activity to demand the appointment of a special prosecutor, and the media called out Trump’s “grotesque abuse of power.” A handful of Republicans also expressed concern, but words just aren’t enough.

Most importantly, people across the country are refusing to stay silent. You can use Indivisible’s special guide to demand your member of Congress takes action, and then on June 3, you can join the March for Truth.

2. Vive La France! France rejected presidential candidate Marine Le Pen, in a resounding defeat of xenophobia, anti-Semitism, and Islamophobia. They elected Emmanuel Macron instead—and went a step further by protesting against his neoliberal policies the very next day. ❤️ 🇫🇷

Note to American media: After certain media outlets were blocked from covering Le Pen’s election night party, Le Monde and others boycotted the event in solidarity with their fellow journalists. #journalismatwork

3. People fought back against last week’s health care vote using a diversity of tactics:

👊  Staging die-ins at their representatives’ offices.

👊  Speaking out at town halls. Special shoutout to the New Jerseyans who confronted Rep. Tom MacArthur, the Congressman behind the key amendment that allowed Trumpcare to pass, for more than four hours and showed us all how it’s done. YAS!

Plus: 👊  Virginia 👊  Iowa 👊   New York  👊  Idaho  👊  North Carolina

👊  Preparing a lawsuit.

👊  Persistently asking questions. #journalismatworkagain

👊  Protesting Paul Ryan during his visit to New York.

👊  Donating more than $1.3 million to defeat Republicans who voted for Trumpcare and  volunteering for their Democratic opponents:

I have never canvassed before, but I will f—-ing crawl door to door to make sure you lose.

4. Democratic representatives are holding town halls in Republican districts, since their Republican counterparts can’t take the heat. #adoptadistrict

5. Remember Betsy DeVos’s staggeringly offensive comments about HBCUs a few months ago? Well, these students do too, and they weren’t afraid to let her know their thoughts. Seriously, this video is a must-see. #classof2017🎓👍

6. A federal judge ruled that Houston’s cash bail system violates the Constitution by favoring the wealthy, and disproportionately hurting people of color and the poor—and ordered the county to begin releasing inmates. (Thanks, Kate!)

Select cities are also piloting free housing programs for the formerly incarcerated, to help them stabilize their lives and prevent a return to prison.

7. The Senate voted to maintain an Obama-era regulation controlling the release of methane from oil and gas wells on public land.

8. Sally Yates testified at a congressional hearing on Russia’s meddling in the 2016 election—and boy, was she heard. 🙌

9. After the Illinois state budget cut funding for children to visit their mothers in prison, groups raised enough money to provide them bus rides through the summer. (You can still donate to keep this going longer!)

Also, a coalition of organizers has raised nearly $400,000 in bail money to release incarcerated black mothers from prison in time for Mother’s Day. Learn more, find local actions, and donate at their website.

10. This week, an Australian senator became the first politician to take advantage of a new rule allowing breastfeeding on the senate floor. This may be a first in Australia, but we’ve seen it before, and we support these women who work.

11. Connecticut became the eighth state to ban conversion therapy.

12. Girls in Spain joined a boys’ soccer league—and won the championship game.

We’ll leave you with these wise words for the weekend. Keep it up, Team Resistance! 💪

P.S. So good and even better.
